The holiday packing checklist you can actually use

A realistic packing system for city breaks, family trips and longer holidays, with documents, essentials and a flexible final check.

1. Start with the itinerary, not the suitcase

Think through the weather, trip length, activities, dress codes, laundry access and luggage allowance. A long weekend in a city and a family resort holiday need different packing systems.

2. Secure essential documents

Confirm passport validity, visas or authorisations, travel insurance, booking confirmations, licence where applicable and any required health documentation using official destination guidance. Keep secure backups accessible if a device fails.

3. Plan clothing as outfits

Pack interchangeable outfits, check local weather shortly before departure and include footwear you already know is comfortable. Make space for laundry rather than assuming you need a completely new outfit every day.

4. Prepare medicines and personal items

Keep necessary medication in original packaging when appropriate, check destination restrictions and carry prescription information where needed. Include essential toiletries, glasses or contact lens supplies, chargers and adapters.

5. Use a household shared checklist

Separate each traveller's personal items from shared essentials. For families, record who is responsible for documents, snacks, children's items and specialist equipment.

6. Keep the carry-on practical

Prioritise documents, critical medicines, valuables, a change of clothes where useful and essential electronics. Confirm airline restrictions on liquids, power banks and cabin baggage before travelling.

7. Leave room for spontaneity

A checklist should prevent forgotten essentials, not encourage overpacking. Bring versatile items and keep some luggage capacity free.

8. Run a final 24-hour check

Confirm departure details, local transport, bookings, house security and charging. Check documents against each traveller, not just the number of passports in a folder.

Requirements and conditions vary between travel providers and destinations. Check relevant official guidance before travel.
